Rexburg is home to Brigham Young University-Idaho, a Latter-day Saint (LDS/Mormon) institution of higher learning. BYU-Idaho's current president is Kim B. It was later named Ricks Academy and became a junior college called Ricks College, in honor of Mormon pioneer Thomas E. Ricks. The city takes its name from its founder, Ricks, and was formerly known as Ricksburg.
